Goldsmith Tom Kuhner is selected "Artist of the Month"
Sanbornton, New
Hampshire – March 2005
Sanbornton
Square’s resident goldsmith Tom Kuhner will be the featured
“Artist of the Month” by
the Village Artists & Gallery, 51 Main
Street in Ashland, NH, and will be the highlight of a reception at
the Gallery on Tuesday evening, March 15 from 6 – 8 PM. Light
refreshments will be served.
Celebrating his 25th
year in business, Mr. Kuhner is a craftsman with heart. He takes
delight in the perfection of nature, and draws much of his
inspiration from this sensitivity. Many of his pieces represent
all that is organic in the world around us: from the delicate
petals of a flower to the exquisitely unique shell of an oyster;
while other pieces are more contemporary or whimsical. What they
have in common, however, is their superb craftsmanship and their
attention to detail.
An Ohio native,
Mr. Kuhner began working in precious metals in 1974 as an
apprentice to a jeweler in a seaside New England town. For the
son of a dentist, the art was a natural fit and, by the early
1980’s, he was off on his own. Although his designs have become
more sophisticated over the years, he still uses the traditional,
centuries-old techniques of the metalsmithing trade. Each piece
-- carefully hand-wrought in 14K gold, sterling silver, gold
overlay or 14k gold over sterling – is either forged, chased or
peened, and polished to a high shine, or cast from original molds
using the “lost wax” process. Many pieces are embellished with
luminous precious and semi-precious stones and lustrous freshwater
pearls. Mr. Kuhner is a juried member of the League of New
Hampshire Craftsmen and exhibits annually at the Craftsmen’s Fair
in Sunapee, NH. His work can also be found in fine galleries and
craft stores across the country, and on the web at
thomaskuhner.com.
